Socio-environmental perceptions and barriers to conservation engagement among artisanal small-scale gold mining communities in Southeastern Peru

Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) poses threats to biodiversity and the health well-being of human communities. However, ASGM also economically supports several populations from lower social-economic backgrounds, especially in Global South. In Madre de Dios (MDD), Peru, is most significant economic activity, involving stakeholders form different levels governance. To protect this area’s forests aquatic systems further degradation, it necessary understand socio-economic background impediments formalization, as well local perceptions willingness engage conservation. study, we aimed establish drivers barriers participation environmental conservation among communities MDD, which rely on ASGM. Using a mixed method approach, surveyed 85 households six MDD corridor.
